San Ynez, California

Our Story

Refugio Ranch Vineyards is a 415 acre former cattle ranch, nestled into the north face of the Santa Ynez Mountains, with the Santa Ynez River serving as the northern property line. All of the vineyards are farmed and harvested by hand, with a focus on low yields and concentration of fruit. The majority of the estate is unplanted, allowing for a spaciousness and natural, rugged beauty that is quintessential Santa Ynez Valley. In 2006, the Gleason family planted a select 28 acres of the ranch to vineyards, and in 2008 they produced their first vintage, a blend of Syrah and Petite Sirah called Barbareño, now considered Refugio Ranch’s flagship wine. The name Barbareño is in recognition of the Barbareño band of the Chumash Indians, original settlers of Santa Barbara County. Sustainability is at the core of the Gleason family business model and is practiced at their Santa Ynez winery and farms. Through these endeavors, they have created a space where friendships develop and communities are built, surrounded by the vineyards. Kevin Gleason sums it up by saying, “It’s not so much about the meaning of life but about the experience of life. And that rich experience resonates with the soul. That’s what gives life meaning.”
